Section 8 - Promotion and Tenure
Preamble:
The following section applies to all promotion and/or tenure committees. The Vice Provost acts as the independent arbiter in all procedural matters in promotion and/or tenure cases.
A candidate for promotion and/or tenure has a conflict of interest with a spouse, immediate family member as defined by the Mines Personal (Familial and Amorous) Relationship Policy, or terminal degree advisor. In these cases, the conflicted party cannot serve on any promotion and/or tenure committee charged with reviewing the candidate. The conflicted party must recuse themselves from the case.
Where conflict of interest may exist outside of these cases, a candidate, chair of a promotion or promotion and tenure committee, or relevant supervisor can request a review of potential conflict of interest between the candidate and any committee member when any promotion or promotion and tenure committee is charged. The Vice Provost evaluates the sources of the conflict, including but not limited to consultation with other campus partners and decides whether the committee member is recused from the committee. The Vice Provost decision is final and not appealable.
When a faculty member in the role of Department Head in the promotion and/or tenure review process applies for promotion and/or tenure, the faculty member’s Portfolio Dean assumes the role of the faculty member’s Department Head and the Portfolio Dean of the other portfolio assumes the role of the faculty member’s Portfolio Dean.
